Francesco Ponzi
Goldsmith and gemmologist. Unique pieces on commission: jewellery, hand engraving, precious details for interiors and yachts.
The Abacus line
A sphere of stone, held by gold
Abacus is a line of rings with a hard-stone sphere — amethyst, malachite, onyx, rose quartz, carnelian, kyanite — held between the two arms of an open yellow-gold mount, like the bead of an abacus on its rod.
No bezel, no claws: the stone is held by the tension of the metal. Designed and made by Francesco for Ponzi Gioielli, each sphere is cut and polished one by one.
How a piece is made
From dialogue to metal
Every commission starts with a conversation. You tell me the idea, the stone you already own, the context: a gift, an interior to furnish, a handle for a yacht, a ring around a family stone.
I draw the piece by hand and, when the form calls for it, model it in 3D. In the workshop I work the metal: micro-torch, setting, finishing. The hand engraving — on jewellery, knives, watch cases — I do myself, with the GraverMax.
Before delivery I check stones and setting in the gemmological laboratory. Not a counter appraisal: a last close look at the piece I am about to hand you.
01
Dialogue
You tell me the idea, the stone, the context. Together we define materials, proportions and purpose — jewellery, interior, yachting, heirloom piece.
02
Drawing and modelling
Hand drawing and, when the piece requires it, 3D modelling. The design takes shape before touching metal.
03
Workshop
Metalwork: micro-torch, setting, hand finishing. Burin engraving on jewellery and watch cases with the GraverMax.
04
Gemmological control
Verification of stones and setting in the gemmological lab, before delivery.

Commission
Write to me about a commission: a piece of jewellery, a detail for interiors or yachts, a stone you want to set or rethink, a watch case to engrave, silverware to restore.
I reply in person, by email or WhatsApp, within a few days. We start with a conversation: there are no standard quotes, every piece has its own.
